MF Borat [2010] The Mask and The Moustache

In 2006, during a stint out west to promote his then new movie, Sacha Cohen, (aka Borat) met Daniel Dumile, better known as Zev Love X, or MF DOOM. Their blazing freestyle ciphers and mutual love of Purple Kush led to an impromptu recording of Doom’s ‘My Favorite Ladies’ verses over a beat Borat had made back in ’05 with Kulki Boolchek, a Khazak producer. Later that year Doom ventured east, and recorded three more gems with Cohen at the castle of Rudolf II in Prague, renowned for its stone acoustics. This has been labeled ‘Degenerate Music’ by the Putin administration and the whole album is banned in the greater East. Censorship will never extinguish true heat!

The Black Angels [2006] Passover

Austin's The Black Angels transports listeners to a land of napalm-bright LSD flashbacks with an elegantly unholy sound that proves both eerie and ethereal. A mesmerizing debut that strongly captures the 60's psychedelic rock vibe.

Nas & Bob Marley [2010] Relatives Abroad

On the heels of the Nas & Damian Marley Distant Relatives release did you really think we were not going to get a Nas/Bob Marley mashup?! Well it's here courtesy 100 Akres Productions and available as a free download over at bandcamp. The mashup offers various Nas acapellas over beats containing samples from Bob Marley's Uprising album. Unlike most mashups this one is actually listenable & I like it! Per usual, supply a valid email address and it is yours.

Rainbow [1976] Rising

::RIP Ronnie James Dio::
In honor of Dio, one of the greatest voices music will ever see (music? see? YEA), we have the second release from Rainbow. Formed by departed Deep Purple guitarist Rithchie Blackmore and Ronnie James Dio. The album is balanced between direct rockers and longer, more progressive tinged pieces, all of which fare well. Six tracks clocking in at about thirty three minutes, you can not say a single bad thing about this album.

Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros [2009] Up From Below

Edward Sharpe was "sent down to Earth to heal and save mankind - but he kept getting distracted by girls and falling in love." Rich, dynamic, and eclectic, a great "throw-back" of melodies & harmonies.

Brian Eno and David Byrne [2008] Everything That Happens Will Happen Today

The Eno/Byrne celebration closes with the their most recent reunion. 11 loopy pop tunes that wed Byrne's strange hearing of gospel and folk to Eno's continually evolving rhythmic and electronic palette. Ultimately, Everything That Happens Will Happen Today is about how music heals even if can not cure.

Brian Eno and David Byrne - Strange Overtones

Thanks to Kings Ley for the heads up on these two celebrating another year. Happy Born Day to Vonage as well!

David Byrne [1989] Rei Momo

First full-fledged solo album from David Byrne. His fascination with Latin and South American music styles control this release but we are by no means short changed on Byrne's witty, oddball lyrics. This will grow on you after each listen.

David Byrne [1997] Feelings

::Happy Belated Birthday David Byrne!:
Byrne borrows from drum and bass, Indian music and the kind of Latin rhythms he explored on Rei Momo.

Brian Eno [1977] Before and After Science

Eno's last foray into rock music for the 1970s as a solo artist. The first half of the album boasts complex arrangements and sonic textures, while the second half features simpler, relatively direct music.

Brian Eno [1974] Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy)

::Happy Birthday Brian Eno!::
The legend turns 61 today. Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy) is his second solo album. A lose concept album with topics ranging from espionage to the Chinese Communist revolution. This release proved to be a transition point between the more conventional rock of Eno's first album and his more experimental albums of the late 70's and beyond.

The Budos Band [2007] The Budos Band (Budos II)

::Funky Friday Post Deux::
The Budos Band manage to avoid the sophomore slump and deliver a much tighter and more elaborately crafted second release. The band lays down a funky groove and actually takes it somewhere this go-round. The mix oozes with faux-retro lo-fi beauty.

The Budos Band [2005] The Budos Band (Budos I)

::Funky Friday Post::
The Budos bring the late 60's - early 70's funk/jazz fusion sound with bass, guitar, eclectic percussion, big horns, and basic old-school mixing techniques. They are signed to Daptone Records, the home of Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings.

Reflection Eternal [2010] Revolutions Per Minute

A decade has passed since Reflection Eternals' classic 2000 debut, their long-awaited return is upon us. Kweli's message & delivery remain sharp and precise while Hi-Tek's jazz-infected riffs and soulful vibes continue to bring out the best in the mercurial MC.

Nas & Damian Marley [2010] Distant Relatives

Collaborative endeavor between Nasty Nas & Jr. Gong. Marley's powerful production creates the perfect surface for he and Nas to educate and demonstrate their points masterfully. Lyrically, the album boasts thought provoking, introspective writing. In a genre-bending effort, the duo manages to succeed in creating a best of both world collaboration without compromising anything.

Neon Neon [2008] Stainless Style

Stainless Style is the debut album from Neon Neon, a project from SFA front man Gruff Rhys and electronic artist Boom Bip. SS is a concept album about John DeLorean, the automobile industry maverick who was as notorious for his futuristic designs as for his 1982 arrest for drug trafficking, a charge he later beat yet which gave him a stigma he could not shake. DeLoreans' life provides Neon Neon the material/inspiration to craft a quintessential '80s synth-pop tribute.

Super Furry Animals [1997] Radiator

Super Furry Animals display a gift for catchy, deceptively complex melodic hooks. Songs boast intertwining melodies and counter melodies, with guitars and keyboards swirling around the vocals. Similarly, the production is dense and heavy with detail, borrowing heavily from prog rock and psychedelic pop, but pieced together with the invention of techno and played with the energy of punk.

New Fast Automatic Daffodils [1991] Pigeonhole

With a lazy, light dance vibe that can only be called groovy, Pigeonhole unfolds like a party on a platter. Rolling beats, drugged guitars, and stylized vocals, all in the name of depressed funk.

The Dead Weather [2010] Sea of Cowards

Sophomore release from The Dead Weather. "Sea of Cowards is more thunderously experimental - all sludgy bass and thick arena riffs, uptempo and cocky, as White and Mosshart slap each other with a sinister intensity."

F A I L

Why were they even reporting from the loo? I need a translator!

Opio & Unjust [2010] MARK IT ZERO

Hieroglyphics' Opio & Chosen Few's Unjust team for "MARK IT ZERO" a Big Lebowski Tribute Album. Another 'name your price' release.

Justin Warfield [1993] My Field Trip to Planet 9

Strictly for the hip-hopers, debut (and only hip-hop) album from then 20 year old Justin Warfield. This bizarre mix of loops and unpredictable beats is presented courtesy Prince Paul and Quincy D. Jones III. Groovy, but never hippie, cool but unpretentious, its prefect chill out music with a funky verse flow. If you appreciate hip-hop do not sleep on this. An unsung classic first album.

Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings [2010] I Learned the Hard Way

::Funky Friday Post::
Want to take a trip back to Philly & Motown circa 1960's? Look no further than the fourth release from Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings. Sit back and digg the stories of Jones' tales of love and betrayal.

Watch Sharon Jones upstage this Michael Buble character on SNL

Delorean [2010] Subiza

Delorean's third studio release is perfect cinematic dance pop, pure pleasure for your ears. Subiza (named after the island it was recorded on) follows a similar template of chopped up vocal riffs, glistening keyboards and summery melodies. Delorean receives multiple posts today because their rise to prominence is upon us.

Delorean [2009] Ayrton Senna EP

Self-produced second EP from Spanish alternative dance band Delorean. Despite their rock roots, Delorean do tracks, not songs. They can be as airy and suave as Phoenix, but their unremitting beats are also plenty huge enough to convert fans of Cut Copy or MGMT.

New Order [2001] 20 Years of New Order

New Order rose out of the ashes from Joy Division after Ian Curtis' death. Included in this compilation are singles that made the band a staple in the clubs and in alternative circles. Available only as a Promotional Release you will not find a hard copy of this anywhere. Tracks 16-18 are by Joy Division.
